The U.S. organ donation system surpassed one million organ transplants as of September 9, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS).

Of the million U.S. transplants performed, more than half have occurred since 2007. A record-breaking 41,000+ transplants were performed nationwide in 2021, more than double the rate from 25 years ago.

The most transplanted organ – and the most needed organ – is the kidney. The Kidney Foundation of WNY shared a podcast episode on kidney transplant trends available below and at https://kfwny.podbean.com/e/million/.

UNOS has marked the milestone by posting a video entitled "1 million reasons to be thankful: voices of transplant" which is embedded below and available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DuUsqz2laRI
